Helping dog owners achieve a happier life with their dogs through fun, science based games and sports
Do you want to know that your dog is absolutely living their best life? Imagine being able to enjoy spending time with your dog, watching them enjoy natural behaviours, and being a part of that joy.
At Lead & Follow Dog Training I work with you to build your bond with your dog, and to build their confidence in the world. My aim is to create harmony in your household so you can really enjoy time together, and get the most out of your relationship.
About Me
My name is Janet and I am a dog lover, Mantrailing Instructor & Dog Trainer. As an ex teacher and HR Advisor I have over 20 years' experience in teaching, coaching, building and repairing relationships and conflict management.
My life changed dramatically when we adopted our Romanian rescue dog Xena, and learned first-hand what it means to live with a reactive dog. Nothing prepares you for it until you're living it. She would bark and lunge on walks at people, dogs, and traffic, and we could feel other people judging us (and heard it on occasion too). At home she wouldn't settle, and was constantly barking at the slightest noise or movement. We were stressed at home, stressed on walks, and couldn't leave her alone, so suddenly our world got smaller and those who truly understood what we were dealing with were few.

Determined not to give up on her, but to give her the best life possible, I turned to trainers and behaviourists, both online and in-person, and eventually found Mantrailing. Through Mantrailing I was able to start to build her confidence in the world around her, and to further build my bond with her. It's no exaggeration to say that Mantrailing was key in doing both those things, and continues to be part of her ongoing training. Foreign rescues are often fearful of people, but men in particular. It was in Mantrailing sessions that she started to allow men into her circle, and the day she finally took food reward from a man outside the family, who hadn't put hours of work in to show her he could be trusted, well that moment lives with me still as a true highlight in her journey.
Also pivotal for her was games-based training. It was important that she understood she was safe. Playing confidence-building games with her at home, then playing them in gradually harder environments provided her with a level of confidence that meant she could be in those places without the usual stress and reactivity that we were used to seeing. As a reactive dog owner when you notice your dog becoming less stressed, that's when you start to calm down too!
Keen to learn more and be the best owner I could possibly be, I studied for a dog training & behaviour certificate, and while I started to build my business to help others through similar journeys to mine, I completed my Mantrailing Instructor training. Since building my local trailing community with amazing dog owners who want the best in life for their companions, I've also completed my Mantrailing Assessor Training, meaning I can both train clients for fun, and for formal assessment if that's a path you choose to take.

I became a dog trainer because I wanted my own dog to live her best life, and to be able to help other owners with struggles they may be having with their own dog, but actually, I've ended up living my own best life! It fills me with joy to see clients achieve their goals, experience wins on sessions, and get feedback on how their training is improving life at home with their pet dog.
